Strong Correlation Between Lung Capacity and Dementia
If you really need another reason to
stop smoking and start exercising, here
it is: a recent study has shown a "strong statistical correlation between
lung capacity and dementia."
The study, conducted at the
Sahlgrenska Academy in Goteborg,
Sweden, evaluated the lung capacity of
1,291 women at various times over the
period 1968 to 2000. Of the 1,291
participants, 147 developed dementia – 96 of whom had Alzheimer's.
Findings indicated the better the lung
function, the lower the risk of
developing Alzheimer's. "For each
20% of better lung capacity, the risk of
acquiring Alzheimer's declined by
1/4."
Professor Ingmar Skoog stated, "This
study underscores the importance of
maintaining well-functioning lungs. If
you exercise regularly and refrain from
smoking, you can influence the risk of
your contracting Alzheimer's."
