House Democrats File Suit Over DRA

At least three law suits have been filed in federal court challenging the constitutionality of the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) signed by President Bush on February 8, 2006. The challenge has merit because the version the President signed was slightly different than the version passed by the House.

Now, House Democrats have filed another suit claiming their civil rights have been violated. The lawsuit states, "Plaintiffs were entitled under the United States Constitution to vote on the bill being described as the Deficit Reduction Act prior to it becoming law."

This suit illustrates a stepping up of efforts by House Democrats to highlight the issue which they believe is just another example of the blundering administration of the House by Republicans.

Judge Nancy Edmunds, who was appointed by George H.W. Bush, is scheduled to preside. Democrats would like the DRA to be declared unconstitutional effectively halting its implementation.
